We were leaving Kruger National Park, after seeing an unbelievable amount of animals of all kinds. No Cheetahs. But hey…we had seen the Big 5: buffalos, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos (check the rhinos photo on my profile @alejandro.photo for a cool story about that encounter). We saw giraffes, all kind of impalas, springboks, birds, crocodiles, hippos, etc. Unbelievable. We were just lacking the cheetahs. But hey, they are really tough to see in the wild.
We were less than 10 mins away from the park´s exit, when suddenly we saw a springbok grazing. Oh…just another springbok hahaha. My friend touched me in the shoulder with a smile from side to side of the face. On the other side of the road, hiding behind a bush there it was: a cheetah!! Waiting the moment to attack, silent and completely still and motionless lying down. We were in the middle between the springbok and the cheetah. Literally meters away from them. Watching the tense, nervous situation. We looked a bit further and there were another two cheetahs hiding! They were planning an attack!
They were silently getting closer and closer to the springbok, centimetre by centimetre. And suddenly, bam! An explosive run. The Cheetah run towards the springbok followed by the other two, but had to avoid our car almost hitting us. Finally the springbok could escape. That springbok literally saved its life thanks to our car. After losing the prey the Cheetahs walked fearlessly close to our car until they left. What a stunning experience to end the last 10 minutes of Kruger National Park.
