Cirios valley, Baja California, Mexico

Cirios valley, Baja California, Mexico

Ok, ok… the time has come. Lets´s talk about the funny (#notsofunnyinthemoment) cactus accident while shooting in the desert of Mexico. But first let´s rewind a bit back in the story.

We drove many hours from Ensenada to literally the middle of nowhere in the desert of Baja California. A place called the “Valley of the Candles” (Valle de los Cirios) Hundreds of kilometers away from any nearby gas station or town. It gets it´s name from some weird plants that look like huge candles. They can be many metres tall and they are just like a weird branchless thin tree. Like some kind of super long stick coming out of the ground. They are very cool haha. But, hey! there´s many cactus too! (It´s the desert right? You need some cactus don´t you? haha). So we arrived to the only place in many kilometers from that area where you can spend the night: Cataviña. It´s a super small settlement on the side of the road with only a motel, a road side shop and a few small houses. But we thought how cool is gonna be spending the night in the middle of the desert! And yes it was amazing. You could see more stars at night than what the sky even has hahaha. Wow, the milky way has quite a bunch of them eh!

But let´s get back to “The Cactus”. We arrived just at sunset. So we picked the car and went exploring the desert, through the only road, for a bit looking for some photo opportunities at sunset and enjoy a good view of the desert when the sun was setting. I found a place where the cactus looked quite cool and the light was looking great. So we stopped the car and ventured walking into the desert to get a better view. I was kind of excited looking at everything: the sun, the landscape, the cactus silhouettes. Looking good! Oh this is so beautiful. Baaaam! Don´t ask me how, but suddenly I was in the floor. I tripped over with my camera and everything and I was not only in the floor but I realised I had like literally 12-15 super long thorns directly through my ankle in all directions. Like literally stabbed quite deep by super sharp long thorns all over my ankle. Obviously it was quite sketchy. Specially when I realised the thorns didnt came out. I had a broken piece of cactus hanging stabbed to my ankle like a christmas decoration. In the beginning was kind of stressing seeing some blood and realising the thorns had some kind of hairs that allow the thorn to get in but not come out. So after a few seconds of panic hahaha, I started to try removing every thorn one by one and staying calm. I started to stick more thorns in my hands. The situation looked quite bad hahaha. My friend Antonio gave me his t´shirt and that allowed me to pull harder from the thorns without hurting my hands and gradually started to remove them. I had to pull quite hard from them as they seemed to have glue or something 😂. It was a delicate, diy, craft that took me about 15 minutes. But in the end I was free. I was able to remove the cactus from my ankle. I had like 15 small holes in my ankle hahaha. But nothing serious really. They were very thin. But oh wow. Scary situation hahaha. After that I sat down for a bit, relaxed, chilled and cleaned a bit the blood. And said ok, time to keep shooting to relax hahah. The sunset was beautiful hahaha. So I looked really closely and carefully to the ground where I was stepping and snapped some shots of the desert while the sun was setting and got this photo amongst many others before returning to the hotel and having a beer enjoying the last rays of light. I cleaned the wounds with alcohol. And no big deal. There was nothing left in there, very very small dots haha. And it just remained as another travel, fun story. But yeah, I know… I need to stop hurting myself for a bit haha!
